What this pack is

A pillow pouch is a three-seal bag: back seal, top seal and bottom seal. The back seal runs vertically down the centre; the top and bottom seals close the tube. That construction gives a simple, fast-running pack with no bottom gusset to fold, which is why it dominates snack filling lines. The flat, unbroken front and back panels accept full wrap-around graphics, so shelf impact is high without extra structure.

Material choice sets the barrier. MOPP/VMPET/PE combines a metallised polyester layer with a sealant web. The metallised layer blocks light and slows moisture and oxygen ingress; the PE layer gives a strong seal that survives the filling line. PET/AL/PE uses aluminium foil instead, which is the higher barrier option for oxygen-sensitive or long-shelf-life products. Both structures are food-grade laminates. Thickness is set by the product and the filling weight, not by a single stock number.

The barrier matters most for fried and baked snacks. Moisture migration makes crisps and crackers soft; oxygen drives rancidity in oils; aroma loss flattens flavour. A metallised or foil layer in the laminate slows all three. For products sold in clear or window packs, a transparent structure can be used, but the shelf life will be shorter than a foil or metallised version.

Features and options

Sealing is the core feature: back, top and bottom seals form an airtight closure that protects flavour and texture. The pillow shape also maximises fill volume for a given film area, so more product fits per pack and filling speeds stay high.

Consumer features are optional and selected per product. Tear notches give a clean opening point. Resealable zippers let buyers close the pack between servings. Transparent windows show the product inside. Hang holes allow pegboard display. These are added to the web before sealing, so they must be specified at artwork stage.

Printing is available in gravure and digital. Gravure suits long runs and up to 10 colours with consistent colour across large volumes. Digital suits shorter runs and versioned artwork. Surface finish can be metallised, matte, glossy or transparent, and the film can be printed with full wrap-around graphics. Sizes are fully customisable, from small single-serve packs to large sharing bags.

Where it is used

Pillow pouches are used for chips, popcorn, snack mixes, pretzels, crackers, dried foods and confectionery. The format also suits frozen items and high-fat snacks when the correct barrier and anti-fog films are selected. For oily products, a high-barrier structure limits oil seepage through the seal area and keeps the pack looking clean on shelf. For frozen products, anti-fog film keeps the window clear in cold conditions.

Typical pack sizes range from single-serve portions to family sharing bags. The bag weight is set by the product density and the target fill weight, so the same format can run across a snack range with different dimensions. Custom sizing keeps the bag looking full rather than slack, which affects both shelf appeal and how the pack behaves on the filling line.

Filling, sealing and material trade-offs

Pillow pouches run on vertical form-fill-seal equipment. The film is formed into a tube, the back seal is made, product is dropped in, and the top and bottom seals close the pack. Because there is no bottom gusset, the bag sits flat and stacks well in cartons. Seal integrity depends on the sealant layer and on keeping the seal area free of product and oil during filling, so a clean fill and correct jaw pressure matter as much as the film structure.

The main trade-off is barrier versus recyclability. PET/AL/PE gives the highest moisture and oxygen barrier, which suits long shelf life and oxygen-sensitive products, but the mixed layers are not recyclable in most systems. Mono-material PE or PP structures are recyclable where collection exists, but they generally offer lower barrier than a foil laminate. For products with a shorter shelf life or less sensitivity, mono-material can be the better fit. For long-life or high-fat products, foil or metallised structures remain the practical choice.

Minimum order quantity depends on the print method. Digital printing starts from 100 pcs for pouches and 10 kg for film, with a lead time of 10-15 working days after artwork approval. Rotogravure starts from 10,000 pcs or 200 kg, with a lead time of 20-25 working days. Free stock pouch samples are available; the customer pays courier only.
