What this pouch is

This is a flat bottom pouch made from a PET/PE laminate at 140 micron. The PET outer layer carries the print and resists scuffing in transit; the PE inner layer is the food-contact layer and provides the heat-seal surface. Because the construction is a PE-rich laminate rather than a foil-based structure, it is positioned as a recyclable option for dry goods. Thickness is customizable, so a heavier gauge can be run where a larger fill weight needs more puncture resistance.

The flat bottom gives the pack a rectangular footprint. That matters on a shelf: the bag stands square, faces the shopper, and stacks without leaning. The base panel carries the weight of the contents, so the load is distributed across the bottom rather than hanging from the side seals. For dry dog food, the barrier requirement is mainly moisture and aroma control rather than oxygen sensitivity, and the PET/PE structure handles that for typical kibble shelf-life windows.

Closure and print features

The pack has a built-in concave and convex self-sealing strip. The two profiles press together by hand and hold, so the bag can be reclosed after opening without a separate clip. The seal is designed to limit air exchange once closed, which helps keep kibble crisp between feeds. The self-supporting bottom is a structural feature, not just a shape: it increases the load-bearing capacity of the bag when filled and standing.

Printing is high-definition, so fine type, ingredient panels and photographic imagery reproduce cleanly. Brand colours and regulatory text stay legible at small sizes. A flat bottom pouch also gives more printable panel area than a pillow pack of the same fill weight, which is useful when the back of the pack has to carry feeding guidelines, composition and batch information.

Where it is used

The format suits dry dog food and other dry pet food: kibble, biscuits, treats and mixed dry diets. Flat bottom pouches are commonly specified where the bag has to stand on a shelf or in a pet owner's cupboard and be reopened repeatedly. The same structure is used for side gusset and stand up pouch formats when a brand wants a family of packs across different fill weights.

Because the material and thickness are customizable, the same pouch can be specified for small trial bags and larger household sizes. Digital printing starts from 100 pcs for pouches, which suits short runs, seasonal artwork or a new SKU test; rotogravure starts from 10,000 pcs and is the route for established lines where print cost per bag matters more than run length.

Filling, sealing and handling

Flat bottom pouches run on standard vertical form-fill-seal lines configured for the format, or can be pre-made and filled on a pouch line. The PE inner layer seals at conventional temperatures; sealing parameters should be set against the actual gauge and line speed, because a 140 micron laminate needs more dwell or heat than a thin three-side-seal pack. The base has to be opened and squared before filling so the bag sits flat when it comes off the line.

The trade-off with a recyclable PE-rich structure is barrier. It manages moisture and aroma well for dry food, but it is not a foil replacement where very long shelf life or high oxygen sensitivity is the requirement. Lead time is 10-15 working days after artwork approval for digital print runs and 20-25 working days for rotogravure. Stock pouch samples are free; the customer covers courier only.
