What this pouch is

This is a stand-up pouch with a flat base that lets it sit upright on a shelf or counter. The structure is a three-layer laminate: a matte oil finish on the outside, a pure aluminium layer in the middle, and a PE inner layer that contacts the product. At 140 micron, the film is stiff enough to hold its shape after opening and to resist creasing when handled repeatedly. The aluminium core is the barrier layer — it blocks light, oxygen, and moisture vapour, which are the three main causes of stale tea and coffee. The matte outer finish reduces glare and gives the pack a soft-touch look that takes print well. Sizes are customizable, so the same structure can be run for a 50 g sample pack or a 1 kg bulk bag.

The flat, self-supporting bottom is not just for looks. It adds stability so the pouch does not tip when the zipper is open and the product is being scooped. That matters for tea leaves and ground coffee, which are often decanted by hand. The side walls expand as the pouch fills, and the base gusset keeps the centre of gravity low. If you are filling on an automatic line, the flat bottom also helps the pouch stand square in the filling station, which reduces misalignment during sealing.

Resealable zipper and print quality

The resealable strip uses a concave-convex interlocking profile. That is the same press-to-close mechanism found on many food pouches: you push the two rails together with your fingers and they snap into place, then pull them apart to open. It is designed for many open-close cycles, so a customer can take out one serving of tea or coffee and reseal the rest without transferring the product to another container. The zipper sits below the top seal, so the pouch is opened by tearing or cutting above it, then the zipper becomes the primary closure. This is a practical feature for products that are used daily but not finished in one sitting.

Printing on this structure is bright and clear. The matte oil outer layer accepts high-resolution graphics, and the aluminium core provides an opaque white or metallic base depending on the artwork. Colours come out saturated and with a tactile finish — the matte surface scatters light rather than reflecting it, so text and fine detail stay legible. The result is a pack that looks premium on a shelf and still reads clearly at small sizes. If you need a window to show the product, that can be added, but the aluminium layer would be removed in that area, so the barrier is reduced locally.

Where it is used

This pouch is built for tea and coffee, and the material set is chosen for those products. Loose-leaf tea, tea bags, ground coffee, and whole-bean coffee all benefit from the aluminium barrier because they lose aroma and take on moisture quickly when exposed to air. The resealable zipper suits daily use, and the stand-up format works on a countertop or in a cupboard. The same structure can also run for other dry goods that need light and moisture protection, such as powdered drink mixes or dried herbs, but the zipper and base are most valuable when the product is opened and closed repeatedly. Sizes are customizable, so the pouch can be matched to your fill weight and your shelf or e-commerce requirements.

Filling, sealing and handling

On a filling line, this pouch runs best on equipment set up for stand-up pouches with a flat base. The 140 micron film is stiff, so it needs a filling station that supports the base while the product drops in. The top seal is heat-sealed through the PE inner layer. Seal temperature, pressure, and dwell time need to be set for the laminate — too cold and the seal is weak, too hot and the matte finish can distort. The zipper is already in place, so the fill opening is above it. After filling, the top seal closes the pouch above the zipper, and the customer trims or tears below that seal to access the zipper.

The trade-off with this material is recyclability. A pure aluminium layer gives excellent barrier, but it makes the pouch a multi-material laminate that is not recyclable in most curbside streams. If recyclability is a priority, mono-material PE or PP structures are available, but they typically provide a shorter shelf life for oxygen-sensitive products. For tea and coffee that are consumed within a few months, the aluminium barrier is often the more practical choice. Lead time depends on print method: digital runs are 10–15 working days after artwork approval, and rotogravure runs are 20–25 working days.
