Reusable Flat Bottom Child Resistant Pouches

What this pack is

This is a flat-bottom pouch built from a mono-material PE or PP laminate. The flat base lets the bag stand on a shelf without support, and the side gussets open into a rectangular block that holds its shape as the fill level drops. Because the construction uses a single polymer family rather than a mixed foil structure, the pouch can go into a PE or PP recycling stream where that infrastructure exists. The trade-off is barrier: mono-material PE and PP block moisture well, but they do not match aluminium foil for oxygen and aroma transmission. For cannabis flower, edibles and most supplement formats, the barrier is sufficient when the seal is clean and the headspace is kept low.

The pouch is available as a flat-bottom bag, a stand-up pouch, a three-side-seal pouch or an organ bag. Thickness is set by the laminate chosen for the product inside. A heavier sealant layer gives better puncture and tear resistance; a thinner web keeps the bag flexible on high-speed filling lines. Windows can be transparent or clouded, and metalised films are available where a higher vapour barrier is needed.

Child-resistant closure and features

The primary closure is a patented locking press-to-close zipper. It needs two hands and a degree of dexterity to open: the user presses the top corners together while pulling the front panel away. Adults manage it without difficulty. Children in the relevant age band typically cannot. The zipper is resealable, so the pack stays closed between uses, which matters for products dosed over weeks rather than days.

Two child-resistant zipper types are offered. Both are economical enclosures for the level of security required. The pouch can also be specified with a tear notch above the zipper for the initial opening, a hang hole for peg display, and a carry handle on larger formats. Print is available in rotogravure, digital or flexographic. Sizes are custom, and standard sizes exist for buyers who want to move without a new cutting die.

Where it is used

The pack suits cannabis flower, pre-rolls, edibles and concentrates, where child resistance is a regulatory requirement in many markets. It is also used for supplements, capsules and tablets, pet food and treats, and over-the-counter medication. The flat-bottom format handles fill weights from a few grams up to several kilograms. For pet food, the puncture and tear resistance of the thicker PE structures is the main reason buyers choose it. For supplements, the resealable zipper and moisture barrier protect hygroscopic powders.

Child-resistant packaging is also a poison-prevention measure. Keeping hazardous items in a pouch that a child cannot open reduces the chance of accidental ingestion. That is the practical function behind the certification.

Filling, sealing and the material trade-off

Flat-bottom pouches run on standard vertical form-fill-seal lines with a flat-bottom kit, or they can be filled and sealed manually for small batches. The zipper sits below the top seal, so the fill opening is the full bag width. Seal jaws need enough dwell time and pressure to close through the zipper flange. A contaminated seal is the most common cause of barrier failure, so keep the seal area free of powder and oil.

Mono-material PE and PP recyclable structures are the reason many brands choose this pouch. They meet the design-for-recycling guidelines in several European markets. The honest limitation is oxygen barrier. If the product is sensitive to oxidation over a long shelf life, a metalised film or a higher-barrier mono structure is the better choice. The certified child-resistant zipper and child-resistant films used in these pouches meet the federal test requirements in U.S. Code of Federal Regulations, CFR 16, Part 1700. Certification belongs to the manufacturing partner, not to Clover Packaging. Digital print runs start at 100 pouches; rotogravure starts at 10,000 pouches.
