What this pouch is

This is a stand-up pouch made from a matte-oil / pure aluminium / PE laminate at 140 micron. The matte oil outer layer gives a low-glare finish that holds print well; the aluminium core is the barrier layer, blocking light, oxygen and moisture vapour; the inner PE layer is the sealant that bonds to itself under heat. For tea, that combination matters because leaf absorbs moisture and ambient aromas quickly, and light accelerates the loss of volatile oils. A foil-containing structure keeps the headspace stable over a normal shelf life rather than just protecting the pack in transit.

The base is a folded gusset that opens into a flat, self-supporting floor, so the filled pouch stands upright on a shelf without a carton. The side edges are flat and cleanly welded, which keeps the pack from bulging at the seams when it is filled close to capacity. Thickness is customisable, as is size, so the same construction can run as a small sample pouch or a larger retail bag.

Sealing, reopening and print

A sealing tear strip sits near the top. It gives the consumer a controlled opening line instead of a torn, ragged edge, and the seal underneath stays intact until that strip is pulled. Below it, a self-sealing strip with a concave-and-convex interlock runs across the pouch. This is a press-to-close profile: the two halves seat into each other and can be opened and closed repeatedly, which suits tea drinkers who take a few grams at a time.

Print is bright and clear, with strong colour saturation and a visible surface texture from the matte finish. Because the outer layer is matte rather than gloss, fine type and line work stay legible under shop lighting without glare. Colours are customisable, and the artwork is reproduced on the laminate, not on a label, so there is no separate label to lift or misalign.

Where it is used

The pouch is built for dry leaf and ground products: loose-leaf tea, tea bags, matcha, herbal blends, and coffee beans or ground coffee. The same structure works for coffee-and-tea gift sets where a roaster or blender wants one pack format across several SKUs. Sizes are made to order, so a 50 g sampler, a 250 g retail bag and a 1 kg refill can all use the same materials and closure system.

Food-grade materials are used throughout, which is the baseline for anything going into a cup. The aluminium layer also keeps the pack opaque, so a tea that is sensitive to light does not fade on a lit shelf.

Filling and the material trade-off

The pouch runs on standard vertical form-fill-seal or pre-made pouch filling lines. The flat bottom needs a short settling step after filling so the gusset opens fully before the top seal is made; skip it and the bag will lean. Sealing temperature and dwell time should be set for the PE sealant layer, and the tear strip and interlock should be kept clear of the seal jaws. For low-volume runs, digital printing starts at 100 pouches and runs 10-15 working days after artwork approval; rotogravure, which is the usual choice for large repeat orders, starts at 10,000 pouches and runs 20-25 working days.

The honest trade-off is recyclability. A pure aluminium barrier gives the longest protection for aromatic leaf, but a foil laminate is not a mono-material stream. If end-of-life recyclability is the priority, mono-material PE or PP structures and compostable PLA/PBS options are available, at the cost of some barrier and a different shelf-life profile. Choose foil where the tea is delicate or the shelf life is long; choose mono-material where the pack has to fit a recyclability claim.
