It blocks oxygen and moisture, two of the main causes of stale tea and coffee. The matte oil finish gives the pack a soft, non-reflective surface that resists scuffing in transit and on shelf.

The flat bottom construction means the pouch has a rectangular base that folds open and stays open. That gives the pack a stable footprint, so it stands upright without leaning. The edges are flat, which helps the pouch keep its shape when filled. The base supports the weight of the contents, so the pouch does not sag or tip. That matters when tea or coffee is packed in larger sizes, where a stand-up pouch might become top-heavy.

Features and closures

A zip lock sits below the top seal. It lets buyers open and reseal the pack after each use, which slows down staling once the original seal is broken. The zip is integrated into the pouch during making, so it does not interfere with the fill and seal process on a standard filling line.

The top seal includes a tear strip or tear notch. This gives a clean opening line without scissors, and it keeps the seal intact until the buyer is ready to open the pack. The sealing area itself is wide enough to run on common heat-seal jaws. The combination of zip and tear notch means the pack can be opened and closed repeatedly without tearing the laminate.

The print surface accepts bright, clear graphics. The matte oil outer layer holds colour well, so brand colours come out saturated and detailed. The aluminium layer sits behind the print, which can add depth to metallic or solid areas. The pouch can be printed in up to 10 colours by rotogravure, or digitally for short runs. The flat bottom shape gives a large front panel and a visible base panel, both of which can carry branding.

Where it is used

This pouch is designed for tea and coffee, but the same structure works for any dry product that needs oxygen and moisture protection. Tea packers use it for loose leaf, tea bags, and matcha. Coffee roasters use it for whole bean and ground coffee, where the aluminium layer helps hold aroma and prevent oxidation. The zip lock is especially useful for products that are opened daily.

Common fill sizes range from 100 g to 1 kg, though the pouch can be made in custom dimensions. The flat bottom base handles heavier fills better than a standard stand-up pouch because the weight sits on a flat surface rather than a curved one. The pouch also works for pet treats, dried fruit, and powdered drink mixes, where barrier and resealability are both required.

Filling, sealing and handling

The pouch runs on standard form-fill-seal or pre-made pouch filling lines. The flat bottom design needs a filling line that can open the pouch fully and hold it upright during fill. The zip lock is positioned below the top seal, so the filling head does not disturb it. Sealing is done by heat, and the seal parameters depend on the PE inner layer. A reliable seal needs the right temperature, pressure, and dwell time, which are usually set by the packer during trials.

The main trade-off with this laminate is recyclability. The aluminium layer gives excellent barrier, but it makes the pouch a multi-material structure that is not recyclable in most curbside streams. If recyclability is a priority, mono-material PE or PP options are available, but they generally offer lower oxygen and moisture barrier than aluminium. For tea and coffee, where shelf life and aroma retention are critical, the aluminium laminate is often the practical choice.
