Flat Bottom Coffee Bags with Degassing Valve

What this pack is

This is a flat bottom bag built for roasted coffee and similar products that need a firm shelf presence and reliable barrier. The 120 micron laminate combines a matte outer film, an aluminized layer and a PE sealant. The matte finish resists scuffing and gives a low-glare surface that holds print detail well. The aluminized layer blocks light and slows moisture and oxygen ingress, which helps protect aroma compounds and oils in the beans. The PE inner layer provides a strong heat-seal seam that closes around the product without channels. The flat base is folded and sealed so the bag stands unaided on a shelf, even after the headspace is reduced during filling.

The construction is also available as a side gusset bag, which gives a narrower profile and folds flat for cartons or display trays. Both formats use the same 120 micron material build, so barrier and seal performance are consistent across the range.

Features that matter on the line

The one-way degassing valve is the defining feature. It lets carbon dioxide released by freshly roasted coffee escape while restricting outside air from entering. Without it, CO2 can build up inside a sealed pack and stress the seams or cause the bag to balloon. The valve is fitted during converting, so it does not add a separate step at the filler.

A tear zipper sits below the top seal. The user tears off the seal to open the bag, then reseals with the zipper to keep the remaining coffee fresher between uses. The tear notch is positioned to guide an even tear across the laminate.

The self-supporting base keeps the bag upright on shelf and during filling, which reduces the need for a separate outer carton. Print is bright and clear on the matte surface, and colours are customizable. The combination of matte film, aluminized barrier and PE sealant gives a textured, premium look without sacrificing function.

Where it is used

This bag suits whole bean and ground coffee in retail sizes, including 250 g, 500 g and 1 kg formats. The flat bottom profile is common for specialty roasters who want shelf impact and a stable base. The side gusset version is often chosen for tighter shelf spaces or for multi-packs. The same structure works for other products that release gas or need light and moisture protection, such as certain teas, cocoa, nuts and dry pet treats, provided the fill weight and product characteristics match the bag dimensions.

Filling, sealing and handling

Flat bottom bags run on standard vertical form-fill-seal lines with the correct forming set, or can be filled on a premade pouch line. The PE sealant layer seals at typical temperatures for polyethylene, and the flat base needs a moment to settle after filling so the folds set. The degassing valve must remain clear of the product and the seal area. The 120 micron laminate balances stiffness for shelf presence with enough flexibility to run without cracking at the folds. Aluminized film gives good barrier but is not fully transparent, so a window would need a different patch. If recyclability is a priority, mono-material PE or PP structures are available, but they trade some barrier against foil and aluminized options.
