What this pack is

This is a flat bottom pouch built for roasted coffee and similar dry foods. The base folds out into a flat panel, so the bag stands upright on a shelf or filling line without support. A one-way degassing valve sits on the front panel. It lets carbon dioxide escape from freshly roasted beans while keeping oxygen out, which slows staling and prevents the pack from inflating and bursting.

The material options are compostable: PLA, PBS, NK and NKME laminates, plus kraft paper. These are food-contact grades and meet international food safety and environmental standards. Barrier level depends on the structure you choose. Kraft paper gives a natural look and moderate moisture protection; PLA and PBS offer compostability with a lower oxygen barrier than foil laminates. If you need a longer shelf life, a metallised or high-barrier compostable grade can be discussed, but the standard range is aimed at shorter distribution cycles and dry goods.

Features that matter on the line

The bag has a tear notch near the top for clean opening by hand. A press-to-close zipper is built into the inside of the front panel; it seals with light finger pressure and resists air leakage after opening. The flat bottom increases load-bearing capacity, so the bag holds its shape when filled with 250 g to 1 kg of beans. The valve is positioned where it will not interfere with the zipper or the fill seam.

Where it is used

These bags suit whole bean and ground coffee, tea leaves, loose tea, and dry snacks. Common sizes are 250 g, 500 g and 1 kg for coffee, and smaller formats for tea and sample packs. The flat bottom shape works well for retail shelves where the bag needs to stand without a support. Contract manufacturers and private-label roasters use them for short runs and seasonal releases because the digital print option starts at 100 pouches.

For larger volumes, rotogravure printing is available from 10,000 pouches or 200 kg of film. Digital print runs ship in 10-15 working days after artwork approval; rotogravure takes 20-25 working days. Lead times start after you approve the artwork, so allow time for dieline checks and colour proofs.

Filling, sealing and the material trade-off

Fill through the top opening on a standard vertical form-fill-seal machine or by hand. The flat bottom needs a moment to settle before sealing; most fillers use a bottom-up fill to keep the base square. Seal temperature and pressure depend on the laminate. PLA and PBS seal at lower temperatures than PET/PE, so check your sealer settings on a test run. The zipper is pre-installed, so no extra step is needed.

The honest trade-off: compostable materials such as PLA and PBS break down in industrial composting, but their moisture and oxygen barrier is not as high as foil or metallised laminates. For coffee that will be drunk within a few weeks, that is usually fine. For long shelf life or humid climates, a high-barrier compostable structure or a standard laminate may be a better fit.
