Pouches are built from laminated films. Common structures include PET/AL/PE for high moisture and oxygen barrier, PET/NY/PE for toughness and puncture resistance, and kraft paper laminates for a natural look. Mono-material PE and PP recyclable films, PLA/PBS compostable options, and degradable films are also available. The material choice sets the barrier level, so the structure is matched to the product's sensitivity to moisture, oxygen, and aroma loss.

Features and customisation

Closures and add-ons include zippers for resealability, tear notches for easy opening, windows to show the product, hang holes for retail display, and carry handles for larger formats. Spouts and caps are available where a pour or reclose function is needed, though for flat three side seal pouches the zipper and tear notch are the most common additions.

Printing is available in rotogravure up to 10 colours, digital, and flexographic. Digital print suits short runs and frequent artwork changes; rotogravure suits long runs where the cost is spread across a larger volume. Finishes include metallic, glossy, matte, and soft-touch. The print method affects both the minimum order quantity and the lead time, so it is worth confirming which process fits your launch volume.

Where it is used

These pouches are used for cereal bars, snack bars, nuts, dried fruit, confectionery, and single-serve products. They also suit nutritional powders, vitamins, instant coffee, drink mixes, honey sticks, sugar, and condiments where a flat, compact pack is preferred. The format works for retail shelves, foodservice portions, and promotional sampling.

Because the pouch lies flat, it stacks neatly in cartons and displays well on a shelf or in a counter unit. For single-serve items, the small footprint reduces material use per portion compared with a rigid container, while still giving a printable surface for brand and regulatory information.

Filling, sealing and material trade-offs

Three side seal pouches run on high-speed VFFS and horizontal form-fill-seal machines. Pre-made pouches and rollstock film are both available, and the sealing structure is specified to match your filling line. Seal strength depends on the laminate and the sealing conditions, so it is standard practice to test the film on your equipment before a full production run.

The main trade-off is between barrier and recyclability. Foil-based laminates such as PET/AL/PE give the highest moisture and oxygen barrier, which extends shelf life for sensitive products. Mono-material PE and PP recyclable films reduce environmental impact but generally offer a lower barrier than foil structures, so they suit products with shorter shelf-life requirements or less sensitivity. Compostable PLA/PBS options are also available where that end-of-life route matters. The right choice depends on the product, the required shelf life, and the packaging regulations in your market.
