Custom Printed Rollstock Film for Food Packaging

What this rollstock is

This is printed rollstock film, not a finished pouch. It is supplied on cores in roll lengths from 50 m to 300 m, with the web width set to your former or filling line. The standard structure is M.OPP/MPET/PE: metallised OPP on the outside for print and stiffness, metallised PET as the barrier layer, and a PE sealant layer on the inside. The MPET layer is what holds back oxygen, moisture and light, which is what keeps crisp textures crisp and stops fats going rancid. The PE layer is the part that actually seals. Because the film is supplied as a continuous web, the pack format is decided by your machine, not by us.

Thickness, width, roll length, core diameter and wind direction are all made to order. Tell us the pack dimensions and the machine, and the roll is built around that. This is the same laminate family used for snack and frozen food pouches, so the barrier and seal behaviour are well understood by most filling teams.

Seal and opening options

The film can be specified with heat seal or cold seal. Heat seal is the usual choice for form-fill-seal lines running at speed, where the sealing jaws close through the laminate and bond the PE layers. Cold seal uses a patterned adhesive that bonds under pressure alone, which suits heat-sensitive fillings and lines without heated jaws. Easy-peel is available where the pack needs to open cleanly without scissors and without tearing down the middle of the print.

Because the film is printed before it is wound, the artwork repeats along the web at a fixed pitch. Registration is set to your cut length, so the print lands in the same place on every pack. Rotogravure gives the tightest registration and the widest colour range; digital suits shorter runs and versioned artwork. Surface finish, matte or gloss, is chosen at the same time as the structure, since it affects both the look and the coefficient of friction on the machine.

Where it is used

The main applications are snack food, frozen food and daily products, where the pack is formed, filled and sealed in one pass. Typical items include crisps and extruded snacks, frozen vegetables and prepared frozen items, biscuits and confectionery, dried fruit and nuts, and non-food daily products such as wipes and small household items. The metallised barrier is the reason the same film family works across dry and frozen categories: it limits moisture migration in both directions, so frozen goods do not dry out and dry goods do not pick up moisture from the air.

Rollstock is also used where a brand wants a consistent pack across several SKUs but does not want to hold pre-made pouch inventory for each one.

Filling, sealing and the trade-off

Rollstock is run on automatic packaging machines, which is where the efficiency gain sits: the machine forms the pack from the web, fills it, seals it and cuts it, so there is no manual pouch handling and no pouch magazine to reload. Web width, seal jaw temperature, dwell time and pressure all need to be set for the laminate, and the PE sealant layer is the variable that moves most between structures. A short trial run on your line before the full order is the cheapest way to confirm the settings.

The honest trade-off is between barrier and recyclability. M.OPP/MPET/PE gives strong moisture, oxygen and light barrier at a low weight, but it is a multi-material laminate and is not recyclable in most kerbside streams. Mono-material PE and PP structures are available where recyclability is the priority, but they do not match metallised film on oxygen and light barrier, so shelf life for oxygen-sensitive products is shorter. If the product is frozen or eaten quickly, mono-material is often the better fit. If it needs a long ambient shelf life, the metallised laminate is the safer choice. Minimum order quantity and lead time depend on the print method: digital print runs start lower and move faster, while rotogravure needs a larger run to justify the cylinders but gives the best cost per pack at volume.
