What this pack is

This is a flat bottom pouch built from compostable raw materials. The base gusset lets the bag stand unsupported on a shelf, and the flat front panel takes print and labels well. Depending on the barrier required, the laminate may combine NK, NKME, PLA, PBS or kraft paper. These materials break down under industrial composting conditions, so the pack can be processed with organic waste rather than sent to landfill.

The material choice sets the barrier. Kraft paper and PLA give a natural look and good stiffness but let more moisture and oxygen through than a foil laminate. NK and NKME grades improve grease and moisture resistance, which matters for roasted coffee and oily snacks. If you need a long shelf life with a compostable structure, plan for a shorter best-before date or a higher barrier grade. The pouch is not a replacement for PET/AL/PE where months of oxygen protection are essential.

Features and closures

The pouch can carry a zipper for resealing, a tear notch for clean opening, a one-way degassing valve to release CO2 from freshly roasted coffee, a window to show the product, a carry handle, or a hang hole for retail pegs. Spouts and caps are available if the pack is for liquid or semi-liquid fills. The biodegradable logo can be printed clearly on the front so consumers can identify and separate the pack for composting.

Printing is available in rotogravure, digital or flexographic. Rotogravure runs up to 10 colours and suits large volumes with photographic artwork. Digital print keeps the minimum order low, from 100 pouches, and is the practical route for short runs, test batches or frequent design changes. Flexographic printing sits between the two for simpler designs. All colours are customisable, and the factory can match a brand palette.

Where it is used

The structure is aimed at dry goods where a compostable pack adds value to the brand story. Typical fills include roasted coffee beans and ground coffee, loose-leaf tea, pet treats and dry pet food, nuts, dried fruit, granola, confectionery and other snacks. The flat bottom shape holds its form on a shelf and uses the front panel for branding, which suits retail ranges that want a premium look without conventional plastic.

Because the material set is compostable, the pack is often chosen by brands selling into markets with organic waste collection or by roasters who want to align the packaging with the product's origin story. The same pouch can be produced in different sizes and with different closures, so a roaster can use one format across a range of bag weights.

Filling, sealing and handling

Flat bottom pouches run on standard form-fill-seal lines or can be filled manually. The base gusset needs to be opened before filling so the bag sits flat, and the top seal is made with heat. Compostable films often need a lower sealing temperature and a shorter dwell than PE laminates, so check the settings on a trial run. The degassing valve, if fitted, is placed on the front or back panel and works with the one-way membrane to let CO2 out without letting air in.

The trade-off is barrier versus compostability. A compostable laminate will not match the oxygen and moisture barrier of a foil structure, so the shelf life of coffee or oily snacks will be shorter. If the product needs a long ambient shelf life, a conventional high-barrier laminate remains the safer choice. For brands where the end-of-life story matters more than maximum shelf life, this pouch is the practical option.
