What this pack is

This is a flat bottom pouch built from a three-ply laminate: a matte oil finish on the outside, a pure aluminum layer in the middle, and a PE food-contact sealant on the inside. At 140 micron, the structure is stiff enough to stand unsupported on a shelf, which reduces the need for secondary display trays and keeps the pack upright through distribution. The aluminum layer is the barrier. It blocks light, oxygen and moisture vapour, so the contents lose aroma and crispness more slowly than they would in a clear or metallised film. For roasted coffee, that means the peak flavour window lasts longer; for tea and dry snacks, it means texture and aroma hold through the stated shelf life. The matte oil outer layer resists scuffing and gives a soft-touch surface that takes print cleanly. The PE inner layer is heat-sealable, so the pouch closes on standard filling lines without special tooling.

Features and closures

A one-way degassing valve sits on the front panel. It lets carbon dioxide escape from freshly roasted coffee while blocking outside air from entering. Without a valve, CO2 builds up inside a sealed foil pouch and the pack can balloon or burst; the valve prevents that and keeps the beans from oxidising. The zipper is positioned below a tear notch. The user tears off the top seal, opens the zipper, and reseals the pouch after each use, which protects the remaining product between servings. The flat bottom and side gussets give the pouch a rectangular footprint. That shape uses shelf space efficiently and keeps the front panel flat for branding. The side gussets carry print that stays legible when the bag is full; the back panel is plain and the sealed edges are reinforced to resist splitting under load. A hang hole can be added if you sell from pegboard.

Where it is used

The common fill weights are half a pound, one pound and two pounds, which match retail coffee bags, loose-leaf tea and dry snacks. Coffee roasters use the valve version for whole bean and ground coffee. Tea brands use the same structure for loose-leaf blends where aroma retention matters. Snack producers fill nuts, trail mix, dried fruit and similar dry goods. The flat bottom shape also suits pet treats and small-batch contract manufacturing runs where the pack needs to stand on a counter or in a subscription box. Because the pouch is customizable, the same construction can be sized for different fill weights without changing the material or the valve position. Sizes are made to order, so the fill weight you specify drives the finished dimensions.

Filling, sealing and material trade-offs

Flat bottom pouches run on standard vertical form-fill-seal or pre-made pouch filling lines. The pouch is presented open at the top, filled, then heat-sealed across the top seal area. The PE sealant layer bonds at typical sealing temperatures, but the aluminum layer means heat does not pass through as quickly as it does in an all-PE film, so dwell time and pressure need to be set on a trial run. The valve is fitted during pouch making, not on the filling line, so it does not slow your fill cycle. The main trade-off is recyclability. A pure aluminum barrier gives the longest shelf life, but the mixed laminate is not recyclable in most kerbside streams. If recyclability is a priority, mono-material PE or PP structures are available, though they offer a lower oxygen and moisture barrier than foil. For coffee and tea, the foil version is usually the safer choice. Digital print runs start at 100 pouches; rotogravure runs start at 10,000 pouches.
