What this pack is

This is a side gusset pouch fitted with a one-way degassing valve. The structure is MOPP/VMPET/PE: an oriented polypropylene outer layer for scuff resistance and print quality, a metallised polyester layer that blocks light and oxygen, and a polyethylene inner layer that seals and contacts the product. The metallised core gives the pack a high moisture and oxygen barrier, which slows staling and protects aroma. The pouch stands upright on its base without support, so it holds its shape on a shelf and uses less depth than a flat bag. Sizes are customisable, with net contents from 100 g to 1 kg.

The valve is the functional centre of the pack. It lets carbon dioxide escape from freshly roasted or filled product while blocking outside air from entering. Without a valve, a sealed bag can inflate and stress the seals; with one, the pack stays tight and the product degasses on its own schedule. The valve is a small component, but it changes how the bag behaves in storage and transit.

Features and closures

The pouch has a tear notch and a zipper. The notch gives a clean start point; the zipper reseals the pack after opening, which matters for products sold in larger formats. The base is self-supporting, so the bag can be filled, sealed and then stood on a shelf or in a carton without a secondary support. The valve sits on the front or side panel, depending on the layout.

Colour options include black, white and kraft, with general or custom printing. The MOPP outer layer takes print well, so brand graphics and product information stay sharp. The metallised layer sits behind the print and is not visible, but it is what gives the pack its barrier. The inner PE layer is food-grade and seals on standard heat-seal equipment. The pouch is available in flat bottom, stand-up and side gusset formats; this specification is the side gusset version with valve.

Where it is used

The pack is built for retail products that need barrier and a valve. Roasted coffee is the most common use: whole bean or ground, in 100 g, 250 g, 340 g, 500 g and 1 kg sizes. The valve handles post-roast degassing, and the metallised layer protects against light and oxygen. The same structure suits other products that release gas or need a tight seal: pet food, tea, dried fruit, nuts, and powdered mixes. The side gusset shape gives a tall, narrow footprint that uses shelf space efficiently.

Because sizes are customisable, the pouch can be run on existing filling lines with the right fill tube and sealer. The zipper and tear notch are positioned for the target pack size, so the opening sits where the consumer expects it. The valve placement is chosen to avoid the fill path and the seal area.

Filling, sealing and handling

Fill through the top opening, then heat-seal the top seam. The valve is already fitted, so the fill line does not need a separate valve insertion step. The MOPP/VMPET/PE laminate runs on vertical form-fill-seal equipment with the correct settings; the PE inner layer seals at standard temperatures. The side gusset shape needs a fill tube that matches the pouch width, and the base must be opened before filling so the bag stands. Once sealed, the pack can be stood upright for case packing.

The trade-off with this structure is that the metallised layer and mixed polymers are not recyclable in most kerbside streams. If recyclability is the priority, a mono-material PE or PP structure is available, but it will not match the barrier of a metallised laminate. For coffee and similar products, the MOPP/VMPET/PE build is the practical choice: it protects the product, holds its shape and works with the valve.
