What this pack is

This is a side gusset pouch, a bag with folded panels on both sides that expand as it fills. The structure is matte oil finish / pure aluminium / PE, laminated to a total thickness of 140 micron. The aluminium layer is the barrier. It blocks oxygen, moisture and light, which are the three things that stale roasted coffee fastest. The PE layer on the inside is the sealant, food-grade and heat-sealable to itself.

The matte oil finish is a surface treatment, not a barrier layer. It gives the printed surface a low-glare, slightly tactile feel and adds scuff resistance on the shelf. Because the aluminium is a full foil layer rather than a metallised coating, the oxygen transmission rate is effectively negligible. That matters for whole bean and ground coffee where a few weeks of shelf life is the difference between a repeat customer and a complaint.

The pouch is supplied in half-pound, one-pound and two-pound fill weights, with dimensions, thickness, print and finishes all customizable. The 140-micron gauge is heavy enough to hold its shape after filling and light enough to run on standard form-fill-seal equipment.

Features that earn their place

A one-way degassing valve sits on the front panel. Freshly roasted coffee releases carbon dioxide for several days. Without a valve, that gas builds pressure inside a sealed foil pouch and can force the seams or balloon the bag. The valve vents CO2 out while blocking outside air from coming back in.

A sealing tear strip runs across the top. It gives a clean, controlled opening without scissors and helps the bag reseal or fold down after the first use. The seal itself is a wide heat seal, which is what keeps the barrier intact at the closure.

The side gussets let the bag stand upright when filled and lie flat when empty or partially used. On a display shelf that means the front panel faces the shopper and the bag does not slump. The same gusset structure is why these pouches are common for baked goods, powders and bulk dry goods, not only coffee.

Full-colour custom printing is available on all sides. With the gussets printed as well, the branding stays visible whether the bag is faced front or turned sideways.

Where it is used

The obvious use is roasted coffee, whole bean and ground, in half-pound, one-pound and two-pound packs. The valve and foil barrier are specified for that job. The same pouch suits tea, snack mixes, nuts, dried fruit, powdered drink mixes and other dry goods where oxygen and moisture pickup shorten shelf life.

Because the bag stands on its own base, it works for retail shelves, subscription boxes and bulk dry goods displays. The expandable gusset also makes it practical for slightly irregular fills, such as a one-pound coffee bag that settles after degassing.

Filling, sealing and the honest trade-off

The pouch runs on several manufacturers' form-fill-seal machines, which keeps filling efficient at volume. The wide top seal gives a reliable closure on standard heat-seal jaws. If you fill on a VFFS or pre-made pouch line, confirm the jaw width and the fill weight against the bag dimensions before committing to a print run.

The trade-off with this structure is recyclability. A foil-containing laminate gives the best oxygen and moisture barrier, but it is not a mono-material stream. If recyclability is a hard requirement, a mono-material PE or PP structure is the alternative, with a lower barrier that suits shorter shelf life or faster turnover. For coffee that sits on a shelf for months, the foil version is usually the right call.

MOQ depends on the print method. Digital printing starts from 100 pouches, with lead times of 10-15 working days after artwork approval. Rotogravure starts from 10,000 pouches, with lead times of 20-25 working days. Free stock pouch samples are available; you cover the courier.
