What this pack is

This is a flat bottom pouch built from compostable and recyclable raw materials. The flat base lets the bag stand upright on a shelf or in a crate, and it holds its shape as the fill level drops. Depending on what the coffee or tea needs, the structure can be PLA, PBS, NK or NKME, with kraft paper laminates available where a natural look matters. These materials replace conventional fossil-based films, which lowers the packaging's end-of-life impact without giving up the stiffness and print surface a retail bag needs.

The material choice is the main decision. PLA and PBS are plant-derived and break down under industrial composting conditions. Kraft paper laminates bring a tactile, uncoated feel and take print well, but they offer less moisture barrier than a foil structure. NK and NKME are used where the fill is oily or sensitive to humidity. None of these structures match the absolute barrier of PET/AL/PE, so they suit shorter shelf-life coffee, whole bean and leaf tea rather than long-haul ground coffee.

Features buyers ask for

The bag carries a clearly marked recycling logo so consumers can sort it correctly. That mark is printed as part of the artwork, not added as a sticker, so it stays legible through handling and display. The flat bottom construction gives a wide front panel for branding and a stable base that resists tipping on a filling line.

Closures and add-ons follow the same platform as our other pouches: zipper, tear notch, one-way degassing valve, window, spout and cap, carry handle and hang hole. For coffee, the degassing valve is the usual request because it releases CO2 from freshly roasted beans while keeping oxygen out. A zipper supports resealing after opening. A window shows the product without opening the bag. All of these are specified at order stage, since they change the web width and the sealing pattern.

Where it is used

The bag suits coffee, tea, pet food and snacks. Roasters use it for whole bean and ground coffee where a compostable structure is part of the brand story. Tea brands use it for loose leaf and pyramid tea. Pet food and snack producers use it for dry treats and small-batch runs. Because the flat bottom stands on its own, it works well for retail shelves and for subscription boxes where the bag is handled repeatedly.

Sizes are built to the fill weight and the filling line. A 250 g or 340 g coffee bag needs a different gusset depth and valve position than a 1 kg pet treat bag, so the dimensions are set per project rather than picked from a fixed list.

Filling, sealing and trade-offs

Flat bottom pouches run on standard form-fill-seal or pre-made pouch filling lines. The flat base needs a pocket or a mechanical support to hold it open during filling, and the top seal is usually a fin or lap seal depending on the closure. Heat-sealing temperatures are lower for PLA and PBS than for PET/PE, so the line settings need a trial run before full production. Kraft laminates can be sealed through the inner layer, not the paper face.

The honest trade-off is barrier versus end-of-life. Compostable films let moisture and oxygen through faster than aluminium foil laminates, so a compostable coffee bag is best for beans sold within a few weeks of roast, not for a 12-month ambient shelf life. If the product needs a long shelf life, a conventional high-barrier laminate is the better technical fit. The recycling logo and the material choice should match what the local waste stream can actually process.

Minimum order quantities start at 100 pcs for pouches and 10 kg for film with digital printing, or 10,000 pcs and 200 kg with rotogravure.
