What this pack is

This is a lay flat pouch built from a three-layer laminate: an outer matte film, a pure aluminum foil core and an inner PE sealing layer. The 140 micron gauge is a heavy specification for a flat pouch, so the bag holds its shape on the shelf and resists creasing when stacked in a carton. The matte outer film scatters light rather than reflecting it, which keeps printed graphics readable under shop lighting and gives the pack a soft, non-glossy finish.

The aluminum foil core is the barrier layer. It blocks light and water vapour, which are the two fastest routes to stale tea leaves, oxidised coffee and soft snacks. Because the foil sits between the outer film and the food-contact PE layer, the pack does not need a separate metallised coating to reach that barrier level. The inner PE layer provides the heat-seal surface and keeps the foil away from the product.

Features and closures

The resealable strip uses a concave-and-convex zipper profile. The two halves interlock along the full width of the pouch, so the bag can be opened and closed repeatedly without losing grip. This suits products that are used over several days or weeks, such as loose tea or ground coffee, where the pack needs to be reclosed after each serving.

A tear notch is placed on the top seal so the pouch opens cleanly by hand without scissors. The same notch position is used across a print run, which keeps the opening line consistent for the consumer. High-definition printing is available on the matte outer film, and the surface holds fine detail and small type better than a glossy film, so ingredient lists and origin notes stay legible.

Sizes are customizable, and the pouch can be produced in other material combinations where the foil core is not required. Thickness is also customizable around the standard 140 micron build.

Where it is used

The pack is used for mask bags, tea bags, snack bags and coffee bags. In practice that covers dry leaf tea, tea bags in a secondary outer, ground and whole bean coffee, nuts, dried fruit, confectionery and single-use mask sachets. Lay flat pouches sit well in retail cartons and display trays because they stack flat before filling and after sealing.

Typical fill weights range from small sachets up to around 500 g, depending on the finished pouch dimensions. The zipper position is set below the top seal, so the usable fill height is slightly shorter than the overall bag height. Buyers should confirm the fill weight against the internal dimensions before artwork is finalised.

Filling, sealing and handling

Lay flat pouches run on standard vertical form-fill-seal lines or can be hand-filled and sealed on a band sealer. The PE inner layer seals at typical heat-seal temperatures for polyethylene, and the seal should be tested on the filling line before a full run. The zipper needs to be kept clear of product during filling, otherwise powder or small particles lodge in the profile and the reseal fails.

The trade-off with this structure is recyclability. A foil-containing laminate gives strong light and moisture barrier, but it cannot be recycled in a mono-material stream. Where recyclability is the priority, a mono-material PE or PP structure can be specified instead, with a lower barrier and a shorter shelf life. MOQ and lead time depend on the print method: digital printing starts from 100 pouches with a 10-15 working day lead time after artwork approval, while rotogravure starts from 10,000 pouches with a 20-25 working day lead time.
