What this pack is

This is a flexible pet food bag built from a PET/PE laminate at 140 micron. The PET outer layer gives stiffness and print definition; the PE inner layer provides the seal and moisture barrier. The structure is food-grade and suitable for direct contact with dry pet food, treats and kibble. The 140 micron gauge is a mid-weight film: thick enough to stand unsupported on shelf and resist punctures from sharp kibble edges, thin enough to run on standard filling lines without frequent tension adjustments.

The bag is available in three formats: flat bottom, side gusset and stand up pouch. The flat bottom format has a rectangular base that distributes weight evenly, so larger fills sit stable on the shelf. The side gusset opens like a paper grocery bag and works well for tall, narrow packs. The stand up pouch uses a shaped bottom gusset to create a wide display face. All three can be supplied with a clear window, which lets buyers see the product without opening the pack.

Features and construction

The window is a clear unprinted area in the laminate. It is positioned during artwork approval and can be shaped to suit the brand. The rest of the bag carries printed graphics. Rotogravure printing delivers up to 10 colours with sharp registration, so photographic pet imagery and fine type stay legible. Digital printing is available for shorter runs and versioned artwork.

A U-shaped tear notch is cut into the top edge. It gives a clean start point for opening without scissors. The notch depth is set during conversion and can be adjusted for different film gauges. The bag edge is flat and the bottom is self-supporting. On the flat bottom and stand up formats, the base panel is folded and sealed so the pack holds its shape when filled. This increases the effective footprint and keeps the bag upright on a shelf or in a crate.

Optional add-ons include a resealable zipper, a one-way degassing valve, a hang hole, a carry handle and a spout. For pet food, a zipper is common on larger packs to keep kibble fresh between meals. A degassing valve is used when the fill releases gas, such as some treats or fermented ingredients. The valve lets gas out without letting air in.

Where it is used

This bag suits dry pet food and treats: kibble, biscuits, dental chews, freeze-dried pieces, training treats and small-animal feed. Typical fills range from 250 g to 5 kg, depending on the format and film gauge. The window is often placed on the front or side so buyers can see the kibble shape and colour, which helps with pick-up on a crowded shelf.

The PET/PE structure is also used for pet food toppers and mixers that are sold as dry additions. Because the film is food-grade, it can be used for direct contact without an inner liner. The flat bottom and stand up formats both work on automatic filling lines; the side gusset is often chosen for manual or semi-automatic packing where the bag is opened and filled from the top.

Filling, sealing and handling

The bag runs on standard vertical form-fill-seal or pre-made pouch filling lines. The PE inner layer seals at lower temperatures than foil-based laminates, which reduces cycle time and energy use. Seal jaws should be set to the film gauge and checked for wrinkles; a flat seal is needed for a reliable closure. The U-shaped tear notch is cut in-line, so no extra tooling is required at the filler.

The trade-off with PET/PE is barrier. It gives good moisture resistance but not the oxygen and light barrier of a foil or metallised laminate. For dry pet food with a long shelf life, that is usually acceptable. For products high in fat or sensitive to oxidation, a foil or high-barrier structure may be a better fit. The PET/PE version is chosen when recyclability and shelf appearance matter more than extended oxygen protection.
