What this pack is

This is a flat bottom pouch with a resealable zipper, built from a three-ply laminate of PET, aluminium foil and polyethylene. The 130 micron gauge is a working thickness, not a marketing number: the PET outer layer carries the print and resists scuffing in transit, the foil core blocks oxygen, moisture and UV light, and the PE inner layer provides the heat-seal surface and food-contact layer. Together they form a barrier that slows oxidation and moisture migration, which is what protects flavour and aroma in dry goods.

The flat bottom construction gives the pouch a rectangular footprint. That matters on a filling line and on a shelf: the bag stands unaided, fills through a wide top opening, and holds its shape once sealed. The base is reinforced to carry weight without bulging, so larger fills stay stable during palletising and retail display.

Features that matter day to day

The zipper runs across the top, below a tear notch. The consumer tears the seal once and reseals by pressing the profile closed. The closure is a press-to-close type that seats with light pressure and resists air ingress after opening, which extends usable life for products taken in and out of the pack. A tear notch is positioned so the top opens cleanly without scissors.

The self-supporting base is formed with a folded gusset that spreads the load, so the pouch does not tip when partly empty. On shelf, the flat front panel gives a large print area. Graphics are produced by rotogravure or digital print, with bright, registered colour across the panel. The pouch can also carry a one-way degassing valve for roasted coffee, a hang hole, or a window if you want the product visible. All of these are options, not defaults.

Where it is used

The structure suits dry, oxygen-sensitive and aroma-sensitive foods. Typical fills include roasted coffee beans and ground coffee, loose-leaf tea, beef jerky, nuts, dried beans, grains, and pet treats. Pack sizes commonly run from 250 g to 2 kg, though the format scales with the fill weight and the base dimensions.

Because the pouch stands and reseals, it works for both retail and bulk formats. A 500 g coffee bag and a 1 kg grain bag use the same construction with different dimensions. The foil layer is what makes it appropriate for products where a few weeks of shelf life is not enough.

Filling and material trade-offs

Fill through the open top on a standard vertical form-fill-seal or pre-made pouch line. The flat bottom needs a base-opening station if you fill from the bottom, or a top-fill with a shaping collar. Seal jaws must be set for PE inner layers; too hot and the zipper profile deforms, too cold and the seal channels. The zipper itself is not a hermetic seal until the top seal is made, so the pack relies on the fin seal above the zipper for barrier integrity.

The honest trade-off is recyclability. PET/foil/PE is a high-barrier laminate and is not recyclable in most kerbside streams. If recyclability is a requirement, mono-material PE or PP structures are available, but they generally give a shorter shelf life than foil. Compostable PLA/PBS options also exist for dry goods with shorter distribution. Choose the barrier you need first, then the end-of-life story you can support.
