What this pouch is

This is a flat bottom pouch built for chocolate, confectionery and dry snacks. The base is folded and sealed so the bag stands upright on a shelf without support, which frees backroom space and keeps the pack facing forward at retail. The specification lists a kraft/VMPET/PE or kraft/AL/PE laminate at 140 micron. The kraft outer layer gives a natural paper look and takes print well. The middle layer does the barrier work: VMPET is a metallised polyester that blocks light and slows moisture and oxygen ingress, while aluminium foil in the kraft/AL/PE build adds a near-total light block and a higher moisture barrier. The PE inner layer is the food-contact sealant. Thickness and size are customizable, so the same structure can be run as a 250 g or 1 kg pack.

For chocolate, the barrier matters more than the look. Cocoa butter absorbs odours and is sensitive to heat and light; a foil or metallised core slows the moisture and oxygen movement that drives bloom and staleness. The kraft face is not a barrier on its own, which is why the laminate carries a functional middle layer. If you need to see the product, a transparent window can be added to the front panel.

Features on this pack

The zipper is a press-to-close strip with a concave and convex profile. It can be opened and closed repeatedly, which suits chocolate and snacks that are eaten over several sittings. A tear notch above the zipper gives a clean opening line without scissors. The flat bottom keeps the pouch stable when filled and on display.

A transparent window can be placed on the front or side panel so the product is visible without opening the bag. The pack stands on the shelf and holds its shape, so the printed face stays readable. Print options include rotogravure up to 10 colours, digital and flexographic, with custom colours and artwork.

The same pouch platform can take a one-way degassing valve, a spout and cap, a carry handle or a hang hole if the application needs them. For plain chocolate and snack fills, the zipper and window are usually the only additions required.

Where it is used

The factory lists this pouch for coffee, candy, snack and nut packing, and the flat bottom format is a common choice for chocolate blocks, buttons, bars, truffles, dried fruit, trail mix and pet treats. Typical fills run from around 100 g to 1 kg, depending on the size you specify. The kraft face reads well for craft chocolate and organic snack brands; the foil version is chosen when the fill is more sensitive to light or when a longer shelf life is needed.

Because the pouch stands on its own, it works on retail shelves, in gift boxes and in subscription packs. The window option is useful when the product itself is the selling point, such as coloured chocolate drops or roasted nuts.

Filling, sealing and the material trade-off

Flat bottom pouches run on standard vertical form-fill-seal lines with a flat-bottom tooling set, or they can be filled and sealed semi-automatically. The pouch arrives open at the top; the filling line drops product into the base, then the top seal is made. The zipper sits below the top seal, so the seal area must stay clear of product and powder. For chocolate, keep the fill temperature below the point where the inner PE sealant softens, and check that the seal jaws are set for a 140 micron laminate. A wider seal band helps on heavier fills.

The honest trade-off is between barrier and recyclability. Kraft/AL/PE gives the strongest light and moisture barrier, but the aluminium layer means the pack is not recyclable in most kerbside streams. Kraft/VMPET/PE is lighter and slightly less of a barrier than foil, but still blocks light and slows moisture. If recyclability is a priority, mono-material PE or PP structures and compostable PLA/PBS options are available in the wider range, though they trade some barrier performance. Choose the structure against the shelf life you need, not the other way round.
