What this pack is

This is a flexible pouch built for frozen food. It comes in three formats: flat bottom, side gusset and stand up. Each is made from a PET/PE laminate at 140 micron, a thickness that gives the pack enough body to stand on a shelf or sit flat in a freezer drawer without collapsing. PET is the outer layer. It takes print well and resists scuffing during transport. PE is the inner layer. It seals to itself on a filling line and provides the moisture barrier that frozen goods need. The laminate blocks oxygen and moisture, which slows freezer burn and limits the conditions bacteria need to grow. The result is a longer viable shelf life for the product inside, whether that is a ready meal, a portion of fish or a bag of frozen vegetables.

Formats and construction

The flat bottom pouch has a rectangular base that lets it stand unsupported. It holds its shape on a shelf and stacks well in a carton. The side gusset bag expands along both sides, so it takes a larger fill volume without a wider footprint. The stand up pouch uses a folded bottom gusset and is the most common choice for retail frozen food. All three can be supplied with a zipper for resealing, a tear notch for opening without scissors, and a hang hole for pegboard display. A window can be added if you want the product visible.

Print options include rotogravure up to 10 colours, digital and flexographic. Digital print runs start at 100 pcs for pouches and 10 kg for film, with a lead time of 10-15 working days after artwork approval. Rotogravure runs start at 10,000 pcs or 200 kg and take 20-25 working days. The 140 micron thickness is standard but can be adjusted. Material is PET/PE by default and can be changed to suit the barrier or recyclability requirement of the application.

Where it is used

These pouches suit a range of frozen products: ready meals, seafood, poultry portions, vegetables, fruit, dumplings and pet food. The flat bottom format works well for larger family-size packs that need to stand on a freezer shelf. Side gusset bags are often used for bulk or foodservice packs where a high fill weight is needed. Stand up pouches are common for retail portions from 250 g to 1 kg. Because the laminate can be microwaved, the pack can go from freezer to microwave without decanting, which is useful for single-serve meals and side dishes.

Filling, sealing and handling

The PE inner layer seals at standard temperatures on most vertical form fill seal and pre-made pouch lines. The 140 micron structure has enough stiffness to run on automatic fillers without wrinkling at the seal. For frozen food, the seal must be clean and complete. Any product in the seal area can create a channel that lets moisture in. We recommend testing seal strength and heat seal parameters on your own line before full production.

The trade-off with PET/PE is barrier versus recyclability. PET/PE gives good moisture and oxygen protection at a moderate cost. If you need a mono-material PE or PP recyclable structure, barrier performance will be lower unless an EVOH layer is added. Compostable options such as PLA/PBS are available but have different temperature limits. The right choice depends on your shelf life target, freezer conditions and end-of-life requirements.
